Two king john cut half's I found last week wasn't sure if on was richard I with 7 pearls across the crown but it's king john class 4b and the other is king john class 5b I love these short cross coins both on cant so Canterbury mint.
They are definitely an interesting part of history. The odd part is, they are a lot cheaper than if you find the whole coin. I bought this Henry III half penny for $20. They used the cross on the reverse to estimate the size of the cut. I've heard that there are farthings (1/4 of a penny), but I have never seen one.
Nice coin that is a henry iii voided longcross. Theses are classed as half penny then they would cut a half in half again for a cut quarter for a farthing . This is your coin h3 cut quarter I found
Some are still valuable my john 4b was recognised as richard I but it was then changed to to jhon it was his first coin . I have a cut half of william the lion phase a valuable coin and rare type . Henry iii voided longcross coins are not very valuable and a common find I have full h3 penny . I also have h3 short cross it also depends on mint and moneyer. This is one I found Oxford mint
How do you know they're King John pennies? From what I understand John never titled his coins. He kept the name of one of the Henry's on all his coinage.
The pennies were all issued in Henry II's name. The experts distinguish them by the style of the crown. Here are three examples. Henry II Richard I John
Thanks so much. I guess they had other things to do than worrying about the coinage? I can't believe it was just to insure acceptance of the silver pennies by keeping the almost illegable name of "Henry". Wasn't Richard I the one that was always away on crusades? John of course mis-managed things in his own way.
Nice thread/ I learned something new today John John gets a bad rap/ thru Robin Hood sagas. In real life Richard I was worst.
