I'm sure it's been done before in forum history, but why not have a key date coins thread? I suppose semi-keys are OK, as well. But just post only your better-date coins here, regardless of condition. Since I am primarily a Type collector instead of a date-and-mint collector, normally condition and eye appeal matter more to me than how scarce a particular date is. Common dates are fine for your average Type collector. But it's nice to have a scarcer date or two. What's especially nice is to have a coin that is both a key date and a nice example, but that can get costly. I have four coins that could be considered better-date pieces, as it happens. Two are graded in the Fine range, one is just shy of Mint State, and one is not only a better date but also a Gem Mint State piece that has the eye appeal one would want in a Type example. Post your key date/better date coins!
This is a coin that was posted to Wildwinds under my name. There had been only one until I submitted mine. I am not sure about the "key Date" attribute, but it is very rare. Constantius II, AE follis, Cyzicus. AD 335-336. FL IVL CONSTANTIVS NOB C, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right. GLOR-IA EXERC-ITVS, two soldiers holding spears and shields with two standards between them. Mintmark star SMKA. RIC VII Cyzicus 113 var (officina); notinric 7cyz113. Rated R4. I posted this thread on the US Coins forum for key dates specific to those, just because the "key date" concept can be a bit slippery outside of that field. Outside of more modern, industrialized types of coinage with surviving mintage data, anyway. But a rare ancient is always welcome! Kind of a different concept of rarity in that field, but rarity is cool no matter what arena you're in. Certainly a rare ancient like that is exponentially rarer than what we call "key dates" in US coins.
@lordmarcovan Thanks for the feedback. I did not pay enough attention to the scope of the challenge here. I will see if I have something else to post.
Here is a rather scarce US coin from my collection. It is not in great condition but is still very desirable. 1889 CC Morgan
Sorry... Only photo I have and it is a safe deposit box insurance photo... But I'll offer my very humble AG3 16-D Merc.
The bust half series probably has 3 key dates--none of which are truly rare, just more expensive than other years. 1807 1815 1820
It's not much to look at but it is a key date. This is also the coin that kind of got me back into collecting. 1877 Indian Cent
