Hey guys. I figured I would start a thread that I personally think would be very helpful to us newbies out there when we are starting our roll searching. I know as I have started, I just look at the dates and do the thing that most newbies do. See how old it is. The older the better. Now we all know that this is not necessarily true. I would like to see some of you experts on certain types of coins to list some of the key dates that we all can use as a referance when we get change for our pockets or are looking through some rolls or whatever is going on in our days. You guys have been so helpful so far and this is the nicest and most informative forum I have ever been a part of. Hopefully one day I will be able to put in as much info and help to others as has been shown to me. Thanks guys and I hope this forum really goes for a long time and we get some really useful info.' PS: Since I am collecting Lincoln cents, the penny gurus can start listing key coins any time.
Coins you may have a realistic chance of seeing in change: 1960 (plain or D) Small Date 1982 (plain) zinc maybe the 1970-S Small Date Any 1982 and earlier copper cents have more than one cent worth of copper in them, although it is illegal to melt the coins for their copper value.
If i get this right, your thinking of varieties, which in my book are not really errors in striking coins but mismatched dies or problems with the dies. here is a list of some varieties http://www.lincolncentresource.com/Top50.html http://www.lincolncentresource.com/Featured/FeaturedCoins.html some of my best favorites to look for that are not too old are the 1999 wide am, 1992 & 1992D close am, 1995 DDO, 2006 DDO and my best favorite 1988/89 RDV-006. here is an example of the last one i found this week. 1964 fs#1c-26 i wish mine was this good in the picture but here is a link of a picture of one http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/diestate.php?date=1964&die_id=1964p1dr001&die_state=lds Snowman
Thanks guys for the reply. Yes I was talking about what you could find in rolls but also what are the key dates to try and find good deals on that are harder to find on both cents and every other coin, I appreciate the responses guys and keep them coming. I really think this will be a invaluable resourse for people who may not be experts in a certain coin. Keep them all coming. Thanks
My son and I also do some roll-searching of cents. I have found the Cherrypicker's Guide to be a valuable resource and would recommend it to you to use as well. TC
One way to determine which dates are key is to look at any pricing guide and see which dates jump out. A Red Book will do just fine for this purpose.
Once again, I just thought we could use this thread as a quick reference guide instead of having to go through multiple books and multiple web sites to try to find the key dates. I guess I will do some research and post my findings on here so that it will be at the fingertips of everyone for a quick reference. If anyone wants to post there findings it would be much appreciated. Thanks again for some info on were to look for this info
Key dates for Lincolns: 1909-S, 1909-S VDB, 1914-D, 1922-"No "D", 1931-S, 1955-P DDO-001, 1972-P DDO-001 Semi-keys, 1914-S, 1910-S, 1924-D, 1926-S, really many others. It is not possible to find these in rolls or bags. If you want to know the highest price regular minted MS-66 Red Lincoln it is the 1926-S, why, because only one known. Both keys and semi-keys can easily be learned by comparing both values listed, mintage numbers and how priced in the lowest grade listed.
Thanks guys. I think this will be interesting once we get some more key dates from other about other coins. Hopefully this will be helpfull to others besides me. So there was only one know at that grade in the 26-s. Why is that?
Good question we don't know. Many come doggy even in mint state it just a conditon rarity. No rolls then, roaring twenty's, few coin collectors. none saved, the cent was really used then - it's just an oddball. If you want to get a real laugh of similar type look at 1983-P rolls of quarters! There just ARE coins like this. The 1915-P Lincoln in 65 RD and above - the one known 1919 Lincoln in PCGS 69 or for fun look up the 1931-S anf the price spreads in XF to MS, very samll incriments of value in fact it is rarer in low grades than high. There is thousands of individual stories just like this in coins, reasons why history told and it can change to take the gold found on S.S. Central America. Many pieces were almost unknown but now can be found albeit still very high. A million stories in coins!
That is why I am so excited to get collecting and learning. Not only do I like the art of coins but I also like the history behind them. There are so many books that I want to read but I started with coin collecting for dummies until my red book gets here. After that I will get into the more specific about pennies and others. Thanks for the info
You need to purchase it. I looked around and Amazon.com had the best deal. If you cross the $25 mark, you get free shipping. TC
Cool, thanks. I will definately put that on my list of books I need to get soon. I want "the history of the Lincoln cent" as well. Thanks for all the good response guys. Can someone tell me about the key dates for halves. I am getting a box and going through it and want to know what to look for.
