Picked this up at a local brick-and-mortar used book store for a fraction of the price it would be at a numismatic bookseller online. It's AMAZING! It's a hefty coffee table book containing 1,430 black and white photos of the most stunning Roman coins imaginable from the Republican through the late Imperial period. It's big ... How big? Well, it dwarfs Sear ... What's inside? Page after page of this sort of thing ...
Yes, it is a spectacular book. It is hard to want to read the words when the pictures are so beautiful, but the text is really quite good and informative about Roman coins.
I bought a copy 30 years ago and I still have it. I especially like all of the photos of the beautiful medallions issued by the various emperors. Lots of great ones of Constantine, one of Gordian III mounted on a rostrum addressing his troops, and so on. It's a great book. The pics of Hadrian alone make the book worthwhile on their own.
I love the book, but don't have it. I saw a copy at NYINC earlier in the year, but wasn't ready to drop $200 on it. Just out of curiosity, what DID you pay for it, so I can gnash my teeth and turn green with envy?
That it's a really impressive looking book. If I weren't saving up my book budget for the new book on Ptolemaic coins by Catherine Lorber, I would pick it up in a heartbeat. I love great coin books, regardless of the subject.
Actually the book is not only great with the coin images but the historical text is excellent as well. It cost me about 80 dollars 30 years ago.
That's awesome, Roman Collector! I've been looking for such a book. The one that you posted looks beginner friendly.
The book is great. Great information, great photos, no catalog numbers, no prices....if these last two don't scare you off, you will love it.
