Kenneth W. Dorney Auction win: Roman Republic M. Herennius denarius

I won a modest little coin from the prestigious Kenneth W. Dorney auction. I had bid on a cheaper coin, but got outbid, and not wishing to get into a bidding war for yet another Roman Republic denarius with a biga or quadriga reverse theme, I decided to up the ante a little. I was the only bidder on this baby, and at a decent price compared to what I've seen for sale out there.

    M. Herennius denarius (108-107 BCE).jpg
Lot 070. M Herennius, 108 - 107 BC, Silver Denarius, Amphinomus Carrying His Father
    M Herennius, 108 - 107 BC
Silver Denarius, Rome Mint, 18mm, 3.48 grams
Obverse: Head of Pietas right, PIETAS behind.
Reverse: Amphinomus carrying his father right, M HERENNI to left, L and dot to right.
    Herennia1a // Crawford308/1b // Sydenham567a

It looks to be toned a dull gray, but that's ok. The details on the coin are decent and are fairly well centered compared to some examples I've seen out there. At least there is no horse at all on the reverse, which is a big win for me. This is only my second Roman Republic denarius without any horses at all on the reverse.

Show off your own M. Herennius examples, or any win from today's Kenneth W. Dorney auction. Thanks to our own member @Ken Dorney for going through the trouble of putting together this auction.

Interesting reverse. I have no coins from Ken to share.

Amphinomus is carrying his father to safety during an eruption of Mt. Etna. The reverse is an expression of filial piety. Great score on that coin @Sallent ! I was hoping someone on this forum would snatch it up - it's an excellent representative of its type.

Cool coin. When I first saw it before reading what the reverse was, I thought it was some sort of wrestling or games depiction But what it actually is, is much more interesting.

I nearly bid on that one myself, but opted for another republican coin instead (plus a few other things...)

Thank you all fo the nice comments. I've searched for these coins here and they don't seem to be all that common on cointalk. Only a handful over the years, which is a shame as it is a rather beautiful and interesting Roman Republic denarius (ie. not the same old Roma in helmet and biga combination that was so popular at the time).

I still haven't gotten the invoice, but I believe the damage with auction fees and shipping should be about $143, which is substantially lower than these seem to sell on vcoins and dealer websites. The going rate on vcoins for one like mine seems to be around $200, and I've seen as high as $300 for one that is shinier and slightly better preserved than mine. I know because I almost bought it half a year ago but decided not to pull the trigger on it, and is still available. Incidentally, they do have one on the site that is similar in wear to mine for $120, but it does have some edge damage which may put you off, though there is another one for sale at a similar price and preservation to mine if you don't mind ordering from the UK and waiting 1 month to get it.

Nice. I was watching that one myself, but bid on three others (which I won). So I shot my whole budget before this coin came up.

I picked this girl up today. Turns out I wasn't the only bidder but still managed a comfortable price.
I thought about bidding on other coins but have really stretched my coin budget the past couple of months.

That is a real beauty. Congrats.

As for budget, yeah, same here. I'm limiting myself to two coins this month, and will probably slow down to one coin a month after that. Even then, I'm still on track to purchasing almost as many coins as I did in 2016. I went kind of crazy on coins from January through April. I was literally purchasing a coin every 3 or 4 days.

Yes, I've been putting them at a spot in the safe seperate from older coins, waiting to be cataloged and numbered. I really need to stop and regroup. Seen a couple that have been on the want list and then a few bargains that I just couldn't say no to. I still have a couple I've not ID'd yet.
