I'm working on completing a Kennedy half dollar collection my father-in-law was working on until his death in 1990. I was curious about the more recent coins that seem to be absent. I read that the 2003 P and D were never released into circulation. If true, do dealers have them??? What about 2002 and I don't see anything about the 2004-2005. Have they stopped producing them? Where do we stand with the Kennedy half dollars today? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Dealers have them and I happen to know a guy that buys a bag almost every year just to use...so you might find 2003-2005 coins in circulation even if the FED's didn't put them there... No...the mint still makes halves...you might want to look at a web site called...Coin Facts...it has info about the Kennedy halves. Speedy
About 4 months ago I decided to start a Dansco Kennedy album while I was roll searching, to help pass the time when I wasn't getting much else worth keeping. I have found 2002 and 2003 P and D keepers. The 2003s really surprised me. I'd heard none had been released into circulation, yet there they were in a bank roll. I've seen maybe 4 or 5 total. I should have kept the "extras" but didn't. I still need a 2001-P. I've seen just a few of those too.
My JFK collection is complete...through 2005. The 2003, 2004, and 2005 cost me $1 each from my coin dealer.
The U.S. Mint offers P&D rolls and P&D bags of 2001 and 2005 Kennedy halves. http://catalog.usmint.gov
An up to date Kennedy set will run up around $1,200 now days with all the BU and proof issues. This won't include any of the dozens of major varieties or special issues. If you buy the set already assembled, many of the BU coins will be very unattractive. Incredibly, you can assemble the set yourself and not only save a little money but be assured of having all attractive coins.
Don't be scared off by cladking's price, the majority of that price is in just a few coins i.e. the mid to late 90's silver proofs and the 98 silver matte proof (~$300 by itself).
