HI ALL I am going to be putting togeather a date and mint set of KENNEDY HALF DOLLARS from 1964 to date. They will all be from the Philadelphia mint, and will be cerculated coins. MY question is, are the 1970-p and the 1987-p the only coins I will not find in circulation because they came only in mint sets ? OR are there others I will have a hard time finding in circulation thanks for any help you can give me.
Bruce, In addition to the ones you mentioned, there have been no Kennedys issued for circulation since 2001 and in that year, just over 12 million Denver and NO Philly halves were released. They have been available from the Mint for collectors and dealers since then so you won't likely find them in circulation but they're not that expensive. Also, the 40% silver UNC 1976 was only put into Bicentennial sets.
There were no 1970 Philadelphia Kennedys. The 1970 D and S are hard to find in circulation- no business strikes were produced. The 1987 P and D were also in mint/proof sets only too, but I've found both in circulation. With a little luck and a lot of patience you could find all of them. Edit: Sorry- just noticed that you only want Ps, but the same info applies.....
I have found a couple of 87 P and D's and 05 P and D's in circulation. Most dates should be pretty easy. Charlie
You guys might have found some of mine.Last year,I purchased two rolls from the mint, picked out the best ones for my collection and then spent the rest.Obviously I'm not the only one.
If you are only looking to put together a set from the Philadelphia mint, this is the complete list: 1964 (90%) 1965 (40%) 1966 (40%) 1967 (40%) 1971-1974 1976 (Bicentennial) 1977-1986 1987 (only released in mint sets) 1988-2001 2002-2006 (Not released for general circulation) Most dates should be very easy to find in criculation, but it may be hard to find some of the coins from the mid 1980's in BU. I have found a complete set of BU Kennedy's both P and D in circulation, with the exception of the 1970-D. Best of luck in your quest! Tom
