I have 1971 & 1972 Kennedys that I need opinions on. I haven’t quite figured out the Doubled Die vs Machine Damaged Doubling, but think I’m zeroing in on it. I have a bunch of pics so will only show the 1971 to start. I believe this is an example of MDD. Am I correct? Hope the photos are good enough.
It looks like die deterioration doubling to me. Note that there are parallel striations pointing toward the rim, and the lines of the letters are irregular rather than straight. Chris
Whatever it is, it's MDD or DDD as Chris suggested, but not DD. This photo really helped me understand the differences. MDD = Machine Doubled and DD = Hub Doubled. Nice photos by the way, very clear.
Thanks guys. I have looked at the line drawing before, but to me it sort of looked like a combination of both. I did decide on the MDD. There always seems like there is a part of the coin the throws me though. The 1972 I was going to show, is pretty close, but not quite.
There are still some pretty cool looking MDD coins that don't hold a premium but are fun to have. I have a few in my collection just because the MDD was notable with the naked eye and I liked it.
