I have in my possession a Kennedy half dollar dated 1979. It seems to be gold plated or gold. It has 2 dates stamped on it. Under the chin 1960 and to the right above "we trust" 1985. Do you have any information on this coin?
Welcome to the forum Montminr Do you have a picture? The only dual date Kennedy half dollar that I know of was the bicentennial (1776-1976). It is probably a medal of some kind.
I have the coin with me. I collect kennedy half's and never saw one like it before. The dates were stamped on. You can see the indentation. It was bought at a coin show.
Do you have a way to post a pic tonight? It definitely sounds like it was altered post-mint. But I am curious to see it. When you bought it, was it sold as an authentic coin or were the alterations mentioned to you?
Welcom aboard montminr. With some variation this method can be used on silver coins. The dates are figments of some 12-year-old imagination (regardless of the physical age of the perpetrator.) Kennedies weren't minted until 1964, so the 1960 where the date should be is probably an altered 1968, and the 1985 where no date belongs is a post-production addon. Unfortunately, if you paid more than 50¢ to acquire it, you were scammed.
