Is this a double die or machine doubling? It looks rounded to me and not flat.

Yes, it is! It's a 1966 SMS Kennedy. It is either FS-103 or FS-104.

FS-103 has a doubled profile, IGWT, the eye, hair & designer's initials.

FS-104 has the above with additional doubling on the TY of LIBERTY.

Awesome! My first double die:D My dad went gambling with 20 dollars on a 50 cent machine and got $250 worth of half's. The casino was closing down for the night so he just left with the half's. I do not see any doubling on the T and Y so it's a FS-103. Could you guess the grade and value of it?

I'd guess about AU53......not worth a whole lot but still more than face value.

WOW...that one came out of a slot machine? Every Kennedy half I ever got out of a slot looked like they just got run over by rush hour traffic...good find!

Can someone give me an idea on the value of this?

It totally depends upon which DDO the coin is. There are more than just the two cpm9ball mentioned that have a doubled profile.

So.................on your circulated and unattributed example, I'd say you'd be lucky to turn $5.00 on it. Throw an attribution onto it and, again depending, it could go lower (since they would know what it is) or higher (if its something they need).

I forgot to add a BIG CONGRATULATIONS!

All of a sudden finding these can be extremely exciting as I know it was for me!

It also got me "hooked" on Kennedy Varieties!

I'm sorry. The 4th Edition of the CPG lists the FS-102, 103 & 104, and I didn't check the master list at CONECA either.

FS-102, FS-103, and FS-104 (from the 4th edition of CPG) are SMS coins. The OP's coin appears to be a business strike which leaves only FS-101 (for the CPG). NOTE: The DDO number does not correspond to the FS Number.

    The other possibilities are:

    DDO-003, DDO-004, DDO-005, DDO-006, DDO-008, DDO-014, DDO-021, DDO-022, DDO-023, DDO-026, and DDO-027.

I know the list continues from there on the CONECA site which helped me confirm a coin originally graded as an SMS coin as a business strike coin which had a significant price difference.

The TPG's are not really up to speed on SMS vs non-SMS coinage and quite frequently grade MS66 non-SMS coins as SMS. The only way to overcome this is by being familiar with what die varieties are available on what coins.

    That's good to know. Thanks!

At least I know for sure that the photos I posted are SMS because J T Stanton removed them himself at FUN.

Colter...your half dollar is most likely a Business Strike (BS) since it was found in circulation. You could use a couple of listings to attribute the die, the CONECA listings or Wexler’s listings; I don’t know how to access Wexler’s listings, and the CPG is worthless except for the big dogs. I use the CONECA listings, http://www.conecaonline.org/content/kennedydoubleddies19651970.html#_1966_5. Your half dollar has medium to light profile doubling, check out the medium to light profile BS in the listings, use the descriptions and markers...you should be able to figure out which die it is.

    Larry,

I've got so many books that I had forgotten about one. I have a publisher's proof copy of James Wiles' book on Kennedy's. In your opinion, is this as good as Wexler's listings?

Chris...James Wiles book is outstanding...I have had a copy of it open on my desk next to my scope for the last 10 years, I use it most every day. Between the book and the CONECA listings, http://www.conecaonline.org/variety_listings.html you really don’t need anything else for attributions. Although Variety Vista can be some help sometimes, http://www.varietyvista.com/. I don’t deal with the Wexler listings at all for half dollars.

Yeah, I've had to move a couple of times over the last four years, and some things just got packed away which I forgot were even here. So, my copy won't go next to the microscope, but I will push some of the clutter off the desk to make room for it.

    Thanks!

    Chris

PS. Here! This is in your honor.

Based soley upon what I can see in your motto colter, given the notching on the left side of WE, your coin appears to be DDO-005 ( FS-101 ).
