Keep or Toss?

I don't make generic question posts much, but going through my coins, ancients and some world moderns, I have many with labels & tags that are just plain wrong.

What do you do with your tags that have some minor error to major errors like wrong emperors or diety featured on a reverse, things like that?

Do you keep the tags or do you just chuck them into the trash?

I have 3 here that are just wrong, they are typed & have no dealer names or provenance.

Part of me thinks I should keep them, but part me of me wants to trash them since they are useless in every way.

I often toss the tags that come with my American coins. They mostly have limited information like the date, mint mark, if any, and a grade.

Some of the older British and most of the ancient coins I have purchased have tags with useful information. I move the coin in the tags to safe-t flips and keep them.

 

I keep all of my previous auction labels/ typed/ handwritten, even if they have mistakes. I always research data and make my own label too.

If they look recent, have no identification of provenance or dealer, and wrong info, I see no reason to keep them and I could see it actually adding confusion if by any chance they (coins with additional wrong ids) find their way into someone else's hands without you around.

 

I keep the flips and ust add a corrected one. If it's a info card or COA too bug for a flip, I'll just toss it (unless it's Sear).

 

I always keep the original tags, even the misattributions. I tuck them in behind my (hopefully correct) tag in the flip. Provenance is provenance, even if botched.

 

@Mat , I suggest you keep the tags and toss me the coins.

Otherwise, I store the coins that fit in a Saflip, rewrite a corrected attribute on my tag, I might note mistakes on the old tag, and store the old tag behind my correct attribute tag in the Saflip. Some of my coins have several older provenance tags stacked in the Saflip, but it helps identify a provenence and / or info trail for me. I do not plan to sell, BUT! Never say never...so, I try to keep as much info as possible...
