My most recent FAC purchases came in the mail today. I was going to go ahead & use the seller pics, which I already have on one of them. But now I don't have to. A couple of days ago I believe it was Topcat (sorry if I'm mistaken) posted a counter marked Julia Domna. I mentioned that I saw but passed on it. The reason I did was I saw 3 other listings that caught my eye & well I'm on a rather tight budget for the next few months & honestly I'm not used to being on a budget. Recent happenings within the family realm of things has made me re-evaluate my finances for a short time. Anyway these coins screamed out to me. I'm only going to share 1 today then maybe another tomarrow. This one first because it also has a counter mark that intrigued me. The coin itself is rough has some corrosion & is pitted throughout. The obverse isn't that good. But like I said it's 1 of 3 that screamed to me. None of the 3 are in the greatest shape but it does get better from this one. If anyone can identify the counter mark that would be great to know. Post what ever you want to contribute. I like seeing what everybody has.
Nice job! The Reverse and the Countermark are GREAT! I have a few Kassanders and will be getting an AR sometime soon... Very nice - I think most collectors of countermarked coins are willing to put up with lower grades if the mark is clear. I know I am. I'm assuming the mark is the top of a caduceus, upside-down in the orientation of your pic. Or is it something else?
I have never been into countermarks, but some I have found appealing, the OP is one of them. Nice addition.
I'm not sure. The rider & horse is fairly common. The legend or markings along with the counter mark I don't find any references on, but I haven't spent much time on it yet either.
Very nice op coin! I am always a little surprised to see such deep countermarks on relatively hard bronze coins without causing any cracking. Did they heat the coins before punching in the countermark? They must lay the coin on a leather pad on an anvil before punching to avoid flattening the obverse design. Anyone know the mechanics of countermark striking? John
I think you are correct it does look like a caduceas. It's taken me a while to really look at it. I did however find a nice VRBS to complement the one I got from you a couple months back. Different mint. I'm amazed the difficulty to find them not heavily worn.
