It was no secret that Kassander (Cassander) had a great disdain towards Alexander the Great after his death. Kassander became furious with his father, Antipater, when he wasn’t made heir to the empire. He therefore began to loath Alexander and his legacy. Eventually Kassander became king and he proceeded to overstrike the bronze Macedonia shield coins, which commemorated Alexander, by replacing the obverse shield design with a portrait of Athena and the reverse Macedonia helmet design and Alexander’s abbreviated title “B-A” with the Herakles themed club / bow case and “BAΣΙΛΕΩΣ – KAΣΣANΔPOY” or "Basileos Kassander" or “King Kassander”.
