Hi guys I recently picked this piece up at a local coin show. Has anyone seen one of these in a box before?

I have not seen a Goetz pattern or medal in a box before. Of course, they must exist. I just have not seen any.

Your piece is great and it inspired me to look it up. Is it a pattern or is it a medal? I did not find a denomination or an adopted design in Krause for 1927D.

Here is a Goetz medal that I received in a batch of coins in 2010. It has an interesting flock of eagles attacking a Rooster (France). It is a fun medal but quite inferior to the engraving on your new piece.

It sort of crosses into the "medallic" category as it was the dimensions and fineness of the then 5 RM coin. I have not seen them in original boxes, but 85+ years later many boxes are lost.

BTW I collect the 1904 Louisiana Expo Medals that were designed by Adolph Weinman - they are very scarce to find in original boxes and even much scarcer with original paperwork.

From my research I have to think that the Krause unusual sources book is off on this piece. It lists a proof for $2,500.

If you have been around long enough you learn that Krause and Pick prices are just a suggestion. They are at the whim of the contributors and of course they can have a vested interest in pricing stuff high or low.

I have seen enough proofs of that Hindenburg issue, even in gold, to suggest that the price is a bit nigh.
