I just found this site and you guys are amazing. After a few weeks of reading books and other research I took the plunge this weekend and purchased my first two coins. I bought an 1899o and an 1896 Morgan Silver Dollars for $65 each. I would like to know what you guys think of the grades and values. Did I do alright ....or should I start collecting stamps???

Welcome to CT. you may want to read this thread about the grading company that graded that second Morgan.

And the first one too. Here's a link to most grading services; click on the two that you have purchased and you will understand what we're talking about. Welcome to CT!

Welcome to CT and to the hobby.

You may want to only deal with Pcgs,Ngc,Icg and Anacs when buying coins. This hobby requires more research and learning than just taking someones word that's trying to sell you something. Ask all the questions you need too.

Thanks for the great assistance guys! I guess my question for these two coins is, "Is there anything good here?" I compared them to the PCGS online photograde listings and I thought they were at least MS63. What should I do now....sorry for being such a .....beginner:rollling: No worries though...less learned:)

Does the place you got these two coins have a return policy ?

Just a thought & my opinion.

Learn from your mistakes. We all have. But from now on try to buy PCGS or NGC graded coins until you get some more experience.

I would...their grading standards today are not what they were several years ago. There was a time when they were considered almost on par with PCGS and NGC. That is no longer the case.

Outside of the advice already provided overly stressing importance of labels, the coins look nice though may not be appropriately graded. As for price, I don't have enough experience to advice you either way. Still, as long as you are happy with the coins, who are we to tell you otherwise?

Just curious, does this mean the standards are lower than the legacy services?

I'm not really sure what you are asking. What I mean is several years ago PCGS and NGC were considered virtual equals tied for #1 TPG, ANACS was a close third and ICG wasn't far being as fourth. PCGS and NGC are still regarded as they were before. However, a few years ago ANACS and ICG became under new management. Since that chance...both have had significant drops in grading quality to the point where neither is really in the same league as PCGS or NGC. It's really a shame.
