Im Just after an answer regarding tthis GB 1945 Coin with semi circle black marks, Ive seen black lines caused by rubber bands (which apparenly contain sulphur?) and from plastic holders, this coin has semi circle marks on the obverse & reverse which are present on the edge too and with a lght rub wont shift just wanted to know whats cuased this please so I know for anything similar going forward please.
Appears to me like the coin was in a pile that was left exposed to some environmental conditions for quite awhile. Have you tried an acetone soak?
Thanks Paddy once again - Post mint toning another 1 for my reference sheets and as always an articulate use of the numismatics language
Some type of environmental toning/staining. It may not be possible to determine the exact cause. (IMO, It isn't worth the effort to determine the exact cause of the damage, once you've determined it's PMD, unless you believe it's due to your storage methods). This coin is only 0.500 fine silver.
