So, what do you think happened to this cent? The mint mark looks intact but there also is some metal below the mint mark. Is that part of the mint mark that has been moved by a hit? I feel sure it is PMD but am trying to figure out how it happened.

I am sure that if you removed the crud around the MM you would see that this is from split plating and zinc rot.

I will preface this... I am not your errors guy. Not my numismatic field..... But, I don't trust much of anything post 1982 cents display. The coated zinc cents are just too unstable in my view to trust anything you see.

Yup everything when counter clockwise from the hit. Splitting off the MM. What makes you scratch your head at times is how there can be perfect hits on a device that does make you stop and think how that Happen? Some yes done on purpose, for sure....

Zinc rot that may have started from split plating as mentioned or a plating bubble.

It definitely took a hit but if you look closely, in the 4:00 position, there is a small hole where zinc rot has started.
