Thinking about the condition of this coin made me think of the old song, thus the title. The song was done by The First Edition and sung by the lead singer Kenny Rogers. But I digress .... I noticed this coin on eBay and couldn't help wondering what happened. I sent a photo of this coin to a dealer friend of mine and he thinks it may have been wrapped in a piece of paper and got wet leaving the spots. What do you think????
Looks like a "woody". Caused by the alloy not getting mixed well. Just a guess, don't take it for granted.
I think Detecto got it right....Looks to be an uneven distribution of the metal. These are quite common in the Indian Head Cent and early Lincoln Cents. Cant say I have see one that distinct on a 2 cent piece though.
Nope, I didn't like the odd look. The guy claims it is simply natural toning, but it is such an odd look to the coin I stayed away. It sold for $67 at eBay (see link below). It is in great condition, but not sure it is Gem BU. There is something strange on the E in WE and the coloring made me think it was not properly cleaned. If the coin is actually an unusual natural tone and the condition is as advertised with should have gone for twice that amount if not more. I think I"m not the only one turned off by the unusual appearance of this coin. http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-1864-TWO-CENT-PIECE-SOLID-GEM-BU-UNC-MS-SCARCE-/251302342081?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK:MEDWX:IT&nma=true&si=j%2BV8JgIA1yXjmxyKlUfXCwSiNrU%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
Yeah that's a "woody". I don't have any problem with the obv, but I suspect someone may have tried to mess with the rev.
Thanks, I think someone explained it above, but I didn't see it before. If it is a woody then someone probably got a good deal for $67. The only problem is that the appearance will probably keep the coin from getting a premium price even though the condition is nice.
