Okay, so I just bought my first box of pennies from one of the local banks. I am going to go through it tonight and maybe tomorrow (depending how tired I get) and I will post my results. I am very anxious since I bought the box on my lunch break from work and I dont get off for another 4 hours! I'm hoping to have some beginners luck so that I can have a good start to my collection. So far I only have like 4 wheats, 1 Canadian penny and 1 very poor condition indian head penny that I cant read the date on (also bought a magnifying glass on my break). This is the start of my collection and I hope to add on! If you have any tips for me please feel free to share! I'll post my results once I am done!

I"m just starting too! Consider hunting nickels, I think I enjoyed them more than the 1/2 dollars I searched through the other day =- )

Be sure to get a hard plastic tray at the local dollar store and an old credit card or something similar to sort and move them so your fingers don't get all grimy and enjoy. They slide easy on the tray and you can use the four corners as areas to put different years ect. Having to sort coins that have been on a car floor for months with your bare hands is not much fun.

I got at least 6 war nickels on the last $300 in nickels I purchased from the bank. I think I got (2) 1939D nickels as well. So it was fun!

Excited because I bought my first American Silver Eagles today as well =- )

Each box, but not all will have it's own surprises. I was buying my boxes when everyone was rolling old collections of pennies and taking them to the bank. Some boxes were badly wrapped while others, like a few boxes I got from the bank that handled all the local Casino coins, were tightly wrapped. Some boxes were all Canadian then I would get the odd box that a u.s. cottager cashed in that were mostly u.s. cents. One box was loaded with 1960's and 1970's u.s. pennies with several that had turned almost purple. As for sorting out the copper from the zinc cents, it was a waste of time as I ended up dumping them into a coinstar machine because no one was willing to pay face value for them.

    Well the official report for my haul.....12 wheats and 1 Canadian penny. The wheats are (1) 1937, (3) 1944, (1) 1945 D, (1) 1948 D, (1) 1952 D, (1) 1953 D, (2) 1957 D, and (2) 1958 D. And the Canadian Penny is from 1963. Not a bad haul for my first time!! Wish I found a Indian Head or two tho...

Haha I love pirates and the thought of treasure. I'm currently reading a pirate book. My girlfriend said when I got home with my box "That will take you months to go through!" 2 hours later I was done lol.

Haha no I haven't purchased a loupe but I did buy a basic magnifying glass today. There were a few playful jokes. I absolutely cannot wait for my collection to grow even more! It is small now but growing for sure!
