Well, I did it. Just bought one on ebay for $67. Don't know if I got a good deal or not. Time will tell.
Only of this error turns out to be very uncommon. Unfortunately there seems to be quite a few of these turning up. Did you get a P or a D?
Ed I honestly think you may have purchased one too soon. It appears that the prices on these are still in a downward trend and have yet to hit bottom. IMHO, when the dust settles and the frenzy buying comes to an end, then people will realize that this is a relatively common error and they will probably be selling for under $20 before too long. I feel sorry for the buyers that paid $500 to $600 for these in the very beginning. They have to feel sick to see them selling near the $50 mark in such a short time.
Ed,I personally reckon that you paid way too much for the coin.It is a nice error, but it will eventually become extremely common. Aidan.
Good point lol, though can make an educated guess maybe based on where it was found. Only thing you can be sure of is it's not S or it would be proof.
Now its looking like you bought at just the right time. The "Godless dollar" story hit the national press this afternoon and coins that were selling for $40-$60 this morning are now hitting close to $200. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070307/ap_on_re_us/godless_dollars
I don't think that any of the Proof coins will be issued without the inscription on the edge,as the process for striking a Proof coin is quite different to striking a circulation coin. For a start, the dies are polished so that it shines like a mirror, possibly using a sand-blasting type process. The coins are struck twice or 3 times to make the relief come up.Then they are checked.Any inperfections will result in the coin being melted down & restruck until it is struck to the proper standard befitting a Proof coin. Aidan.
It's good to see an official statement and at least a guess at the error amount. I think I am going to wait a little to see if the price comes down or I find one that did not get bid-up too high. 50K is probably a big number as it relates to errors so I would have to imagine the number will come down. If it happens again the number will drop quick (I think - unless it's on a different president). Maybe they will release this error with each so I can collect the complete set.
I just saw a "blank rim" dollar for sale on E-Bay, and the bid was up to $325.00 with 30 minutes to go in the auction!!
There are Proof sets that came out without the S (worth a lot) 1968,1970,1971,1975,1983,1990 and small dates of 1960 and 1970. Its been awhile but it can happen
I just received my smooth edge dollar , and the seller sent me one of the triple error dollars, it has smooth edge, die fatigue and die clash, I ll post pics later , gotta run. I'm excited! Paid $80.
