I would stay away a check can easily be cancelled and CT does not provide buyer protection

I had a member offer to sell me something with over 1,000 posts and never responded to my request to send me a photograph of what I was mailing him $15 for...

Stay away and insist on utilizing Paypal etc.

But my mail question is, If he is selling you morgan dollars @ $18 ea why does he want to mail you a check...

And what protection does PayPal provide with sending a money gift?

none (that I know of). I guess you just need to find trustworthy people to deal with.

Tough decision. I would not deal with that kind of money w/o being backed up. Although if your looking for silver i do sell Half kennedys 90%/40% Paypal/Money order :D.

In my opinion, there is ALWAYS the potential for being cheated anywhere. However, here on CT I feel it would be far less likely that you'd get scammed than anywhere else on line. I don't know why anyone wouldn't use PayPal, I know, I know there are horror stories, but I have never had a problem transferring money in or out. If it was me, if he wanted to sell them he'd use PayPal. Just remember you have the money, it's either on your terms or no terms (if he wants to sell he will accept reasonable terms).

I've sold alot of stuff here in the classifieds and I trust most ppl on there. Just because someone doesn't want to deal with Paypal that don't mean nothing. I've sold stuff and requested a money order, that doesn't have anything to do with trust at all. Either you do it or you don't, it's that simple.

Post count does not mean everything. Just look at mine :p
But I have not had any problems buying or selling here but I only do it with people I know and trust.

Easy solution to your problem, if you want to call it a problem. Let him send a check, but don't ship the coins until the check clears. That's what any dealer would do.

well there lies the problem in itself. I would be the one sending the check. I'm trying to buy the morgans

OK, I misunderstood. Your concern is he may cash your check and not send the coins apparently. If you are uncomfortable with that then pass on the offer. There's probably a hundred other places you can get the same deal.

Where? I have been searching all over to buy morgan dollars for investment. I cannot find anywhere that they sell them at $18 each

I believe you are getting those prices in the classified because the individual is not incurring any cost to sell them.

Also if I am not mistaken someone will incur a cost using PayPal even a gift unless you have the funds available in your attached PayPal bank account or PayPal balance.

Here the link to the fees https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_display-fees-outside

What you could do is transfer the funds to your PayPal account and then send the funds. Of course you will not receive buyer protection and the seller has to agree to accept the funds this way.

I contacted him wanting to buy 25 morgans, and he quoted me $17 each. I inquired about using paypal, and he stated cash, check, or money order only. It is a great deal, but I just didn't feel comfortable.

If it comes down to you having to go public, then you don't know the guy at all. Besides people get ripped off when they think they're about to get the only deal in town! That's usually how it works! With all this questioning going on tho, I am surprised the prospective seller hasn't just come on this thread to defend his name. different strokes, I guess but I would've been on here in a heartbeat!

Not defending the individual who I suspect is selling these coins, but perhaps he has not signed into the forum. There be no way for him to know he is being discussed until he does or someone send him a PM.

The seller probably just wants to avoid paying the PayPal fees - can't say as I blame him for that. While I have no idea who the person is in this case, there are some people on this forum that I would have no hesitation at all in sending them a check or Money Order for $10,000 if they had a coin I wanted to buy.

But I can understand people being hesitant when they don't know somebody in this day and age. Nothing wrong with that at all.

By the way, I don't think the seller has anything to defend at this point. Even if it were me being the seller, I would not feel that I had anything to defend because I would not blame people for not trusting when they don't know me.

Not trusting is just good sense when you don't know somebody !

I'm not saying i don't trust anyone at all. Another thing is i offered to fly into the closest airport of his and meet him in the airport for the transaction (i was going to buy many many many more silver dollars though) He didn't want to do that. Then i told him i would pay the extra 3% for the paypal fees and he didn't want to "hassle" with paypal.

In part true, the seller benefits, although they may choose not to mail the product after purchase :(.
But with a Check the Seller can loose just as well and the buyer would benefit. Buy mailing a canceled check

This is one of those instances where I would suggest back off but I could be wrong don't just take my word for it
