Found quite a few winners in the world junk bin the other day. My goal is pull out anything old, nice or interesting. I don’t know a ton about world coins so I often don’t know what I found until I get home and do some research. At $12/lb a couple of the winners are: 1923 Canada 1 cent - key date and nice condition. 1901-1910 1 cash from Travancore - a princely state in India. This coin is only 0.48g. It’s tiny and probably MS. 1917-S 1 Centavo Philippines - nothing special here but I really like the series. 1952 Laos - several denominations but based on a recent thread I grabbed them as BU mid century aluminum coins. 1955 Romania 25 Bani - Had never seen these before. Grabbed 3, looks like they’re worth a couple bucks apiece. Quite a few other better date early and mid century coins. 2 scruples apothecary weight - have found several 3 scruples but never the 2 scruples before. 1969 Peru 1/2 Sol - RPD on the last 9 2013 Brazil 10 Centavos - DDR/DDO, minor. 1945 Ceylon 5 cents - Lamination. Also need help with a blank planchet in the lot. It’s 16.77g, ~32.8mm and appears to be copper. It also has an upturned rim. No idea here. Any help is appreciated. thanks for looking and happy to get more pics if anything is of interest.
Nice haul. I love those "flying nude" type Italian 20-centesimi pieces. Cool lamination on the Ceylon piece.
Do you know how to do a custom search on Numista? I set up one with parameters: Non-precious (this covers copper, bronze and similar alloys, among others) 32.8 mm (It returns within 0.5 mm of the search number.) 16.77 g (+/- 0.5 g is the default range) Gave 47 results, many of which are copper-nickel and obviously not it. In my limited experience, blank disks may well be token rather than coin planchets. If it is a coin, some with similar parameters are: India 3 Dokda Russia 5 Kopeck
If it is a coin. There's the problem, since it could also be a blank for some kind of token or medal, I suppose.
A lot of dealers who buy estate sales and such..aren't interested in world coins. They just want to liquidate any money tied up in them ,and buy what they know or sell. Ive had quite a few dealers who wont buy certain series...stating thatbtheir customer base isn't interested so they dont want any inventory.
