I got a denarius of Julia Mamaea yesterday, and I'm trying to decide weather I should clean it out leave it alone. I has a thick patina, and heavy deposits on the left side. I'm leaning towards not cleaning it.
Leave it be in MHO. I'm not certain you will like the coin any better after it's cleaned. It appears that the areas of concern are in rough shape. Leave it like it is, it is a nice coin.
It looks nice enough in hand too, I like em dirty It'll probably end up like this if I cleaned it anyway.
Some of it looks like horn silver, and I don't think you can make it look better by cleaning it. Some coins you just have to accept for what they are. That being said, I don't think it's unattractive at all. It has very strong details, and the encrustation makes it look its age. I'd be satisfied with it as is.

hmmm..i don't know, you're a pretty good coin cleaner RG. well, if in doubt, it's probably best to leave it alone. here my only JM.
After collecting US coins for so many years, my gut reaction is always not to clean. I know ancients are a different animal. But I'd leave that one. I like the patina and you can still see the details fairly well. Especially the Hair-do. Which is the hallmark of JM. My Julia Mamea. Julia Mamaea; AD 235 Silver Denarius; 20mm/2.6g Obv: IVLIA MAMAEA AVG, diademed & draped bust right / Rev: VESTA, Vesta standing half-left, holding palladium & scepter. (RIC 360, RSC 81, Sear 8217)
