I liked the look of this one. Don't know too much on her or why there are three standards. sellers pic: ROMAN EMPIRE, JULIA MAMAEA. Mother of Severus Alexander, Daughter of Julia Maesa. Murdered with her son in AD 235. BITHYNIA NICAEA AE 19, (Brass or copper, 3.15 grams, 18.98 mm). Obverse: Greek legend: IOVLIA MAMAIA AVG, Her diademed draped bust to the right. Reverse: NI K AI E/ON between and beneath three standards.
That's a common reverse type from Nicaea. Here is her son -- on an issue from Nicaea -- and with a very similar reverse. Severus Alexander, AD 222-235 Bithynia, Nicaea 4.57 gm; 21.5 mm Obv: Μ ΑVΡ CΕV ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟC ΑV, radiate and draped bust, r., seen from behind. Rev: ΝΙΚΑΙΕΩΝ between three standards. Refs: SNG von Aulock 634; SNG Copenhagen 520 var; Sear 3287 var. (laureate bust).
You're coming right along @Kasaia there's no turning back now I've only a well worn Sestertius of Julia Mamaea And a few of her son, but here is one Severus Alexander
I have crossed the rubicon on this. I went to two small coin shows, one where I had previously seen a dealer have ancients, and no one was selling ancients at either. I went to one hoping it might be larger than I thought, but it was smaller, and was more because I had the time. The other because I was hoping that same dealer who had ancients might be there. One show was about an hour away and the other two hours. Of course I did enjoy the sunshine and outing and bought a few items, including cheap flea market stuff because there was a small flea market going on there, too. I have not decided which shows to go to before next spring or summer, but I know I will be checking out the tables for ancients. I hope to get an idea of what is being out there and what prices some dealers are asking.

I'm not sure if you've seen these pages yet, but a couple of months ago we ran a series of threads showing coins that members paid for their coins in various price categories. It's not a definitive price guide of any sort, but it features many different ancients from common to rare, and it might be useful to see how those prices compare against what you'll see at dealers' tables when you're making your rounds. Sounds like it'll be fun! https://www.cointalk.com/threads/what-your-budget-buys-index-thread.303991/
