Very early Antoniniani are a rather new found interest that I have for maybe a few months. I think the Severan Antoniniani are some of the best looking coins of the Roman time. IULIA MAESA AR20 5.60g Antoninain (aVF) AV: IVLIA MAESA AVG; draped bust right, wearing stephane, set on crescent REV: PIETAS AVG; Pietas standing left, holding acerrum and extending hand over lighted altar to left EXE:- REF: RIC IV 264 (Elagabal), RSC 30, Scarce, especially in such condition, minted at Rome by Elagabal for his grandmother, 218-220AD. Scarce denomination for the period, this type is the only Antoninianus type to be minted for Maesa. At 5.60g, this specimen is considerably heavier than usual.
Good and lovely portrait. This one makes her out to be young and rather pretty. The only one of her I own is a denarius. The portrait ages her considerably. And it is much lighter at 2.6g. JULIA MAESA AR Denarius OBVERSE: IVLIA MAESA AVG - Draped bust right REVERSE: PVDICITIA - Pudicitia seated left, pulling veil and holding scepter Struck at Rome, 218-222 AD 2.6g, 19mm RIC 268, BMC 76 (Elagabalus), S 7756, C 36
Dang thats cool! I wish a had a few of em! I have an Elagabalus Antoninianus (if that counts) that I need to photograph when I get home. Congrats!
I grabbed both Maesa Ants from that particular dealer. I think even the other one at cca. 140EUR was a bargain for an XF early Ant.
I agree but do not have a antoninianus of hers. Big dies give room for good work so I'll share a sestertius.
Nice!! => Sweet score, seth (oh, and very cool examples, Mentor & Bing) ... yah, Julia Maesa, eh? (man, there are so many Julia's and Julia-M's, you know what I mean? ... ummm, it does get a bit confusing) I thought I had a very sweet example to show-off, but apparently all I have is this cool counter-stamped example (you can kinda make-out Julia Maesa's sweet face if you squint your eyes and click your heels together!!) CILICIA, Ninica-Claudiopolis Severus Alexander, with Julia Maesa, Æ37 AD 222-235 Diameter: 37 mm Weight: 17.83 grams Obverse: , draped, and cuirassed bust of Severus Alexander right; c/m’s: Nike, holding wreath, standing right within oval incuse (3) and six-pointed star Reverse: Laureate / Draped bust of Maesa right Reference: SNG France –; SNG Levante –; SNG Levante Supp. 167 (same obv. die); for c/m’s: Howgego 262 and 451 Other: 6h … Fine, dark green patina.Rare From the Kelly J. Krizan, M.D. Collection 37 mm => yah, this is a very cool, nice-n-big coin!! (a total winner, "in-hand")
Wonderful posts guys!!! This thread seems to have her in scarce denominations while even depicting her ageing. I love that ANT and Sestertius!!! My sole example is a denarius like the one Bing has already posted.... so naturally I LOVE his as well !!! LOL
Throw in my special Maesa. Julia Maesa (218 - 225 A.D.) AR Denarius O: IVLIA MAESA AVG, Draped bust right. R: FORTVNAE REDVCI Fecunditas standing left, raising hand over child and cornucopia. Rome 18.8m 3.1g RSC 14 Rare Engravers Error: This coin features Maesa's Fecunditas type, RIC 249 = RSC 8, and should have been labeled FECVNDITAS AVG. It implies that Maesa's FECVNDITAS AVG type and Elagabalus' FORTVNAE REDVCI type were being produced simultaneously, that is in 219 AD, the known date of the FORTVNAE REDVCI type. This error is not unpublished: Cohen 14 reports a specimen in Paris, RIC 252 takes it over from Cohen. About the 6th known of this type, found two other specimens with the same combination of type and legend, both from the same reverse die but feature a young Maesa bust. This type features the older bust type. Possibly unique to feature this particular bust
That is a special coin. We have to wonder if it was a language barrier or just the last die on a hard day.
Vanilla? ... like Vanilla Ice, Vanilla? ... => man, this must have been right in your wheel-house, eh chrsmat?
