So I was wondering which coin is most widely considered as the 30 pieces of judas's silver. I have red about the Phoenician Shekel and the Antioch tetradrachm of Augustus. Which do you people think would be the best guess? I was thinking of buying the Augustus one, would this be sufficient to say that I have a right guess or I would be closer if I buy a Phoenician Shekel?
Only the Tyrian silver was accepted by the priests for the temple tax, so was the most readily available to them. Unfortunately the gospel (Matthew 26:15) states simply τριάκοντα ἀργύρια ("thirty silver [pieces]").
Here's an example of a Tyrian shekel: Phoenicia, Tyre AR Shekel. Dated CY 113 = 14/13 BC. Laureate head of Melkart right / ΤΥPΟΥ ΙΕΡΑΣ ΚΑΙ ΑΣΥΛΟΥ, eagle standing left on prow, palm frond behind; to left, PIΓ (date) above club; to right, KP above monogram; Beth between legs. 13.29g, 25mm.
