So since there are so many regular adams, hows the missing edge letter dollar mintage and value looking to you people??
Its hard to determine a mintage, unless you can narrow down the specific die,but having a edge lettering, you have a severe time trying to narrow down what specific "batch" did not receive the lettering. So in all rationality, mintage?? no clue?? pricing.thats another story in itself.it depends on how many have turned up.If you can prove an error like that is less than 5 big $$ but the more they pop up,the less the value, unless the demand is really high. overall I dont have a high interest in it,so Im not doing the research for mintage or value.just trying to help with a small part of the overall consideration in looking for one,or buying/selling one.I hope it helps as much as it can.
Value has dropped significantly on these coins since they first hit the market. I expect it will drop even more as interest wanes on the edge lettering error coins and even the Presidential Dollars. The latest Collector's Clearinghouse in Coin World (April 26th Issue) has a nice article regarding the edge lettering error's which may indicate that future Missing Edge Letter (MEL), Partial Edge Letter (PEL) and Weak Edge Letter (WEL) coins have not been eliminated by consolidating the edge lettering process with the minting process as these error's may simply be a result of the edge lettering machine falling out of adjustment. I expect that as more and more of these are found, that they will not have any significant importance to the collecting community. What was once thought to be a hiccup in the manufacturing process (failing to feed a batch through the machine) may end up being nothing more uncommon than a severly grease filled die. On the other hand, the Double Edge Letter (DEL) coins may be completely different since these may be much rarer than the MEL counterparts. Remembering that the edge lettering process was not consolidated into the minting process until 2008, those 2007 ADAMS dollars were definitely fed through the machine twice. As with everything within this hobby, time will tell and for these particular coins, time can be your friend if you really want one and are willing to wait. Had I waited, I'd be a couple thousand richer.
