I have John Adams Presidential Dollars with different size of edge letters all around the coin. One size is smaller and thinner than the other. I have not been able to find any report on this. I have heard of weak lettering been found in some coins but not sure if this is the same. Aslo not sure if this is a matter of amount of pressure put on the collar die. Appre ciate comments.
My impression is that there is a difference in pressure than size, but there's certainly a noticable difference.
Thanks. I found them searching mint rolls. The thin lettering seems to be consistent on several pieces I found. I tend to agree with you about it being a pressure difference.
There are two different letterings that were used on the Adams Dollars. Ken Potter has a write up on his website (http://koinpro.tripod.com/Articles/2007PDollarAdamsDblPlainFS.htm) (about 1/2 way down). Hope this helps and answers your question
Thanks for the comment. I have taken a look at Ken Potter's site and his pictures show the same thickness for both letter types while the picture above pictures show difference in thickness in the letters with both letters at approximately the same height.
Suzhiq, Check out this thread I posted recently relating to the edge lettering on a Hayes Dollar. Notice the diffrence in thickness in the lettering between the 2 coins. I found a possible explanation for this being due to the stopping and starting or slowing down of the edge lettering machine. Hope this helps. http://www.cointalk.com/t201322/
g1rge, Review your pictures and agree that your 2011 dates have different thickness in the lettering similar to the above coins. Your thread comments relate to the star over P error and no one commented about the letter thickness. Your start/stop/slowing down explanation is a possibility which eventually results in lower pressure applied to the edge as per yakpoo"s comment above. Do you know if these "thin lettered" coins are worth keeping?
If I had 1 of each, I would keep them just for the variation between the 2. Not sure if there is any extra value.
