First thought - coin with no country specificied = England, but in 1663 Charles II was King.

Faced with the choice of thumbing through almost 1300 pages of the 17th Century Ed. of the Krause Standard Catalog of World Coins looking for a country with a King named John or some equivalent, or waiting for a history buff who knows which country(ies) were ruled by "John" that year, I'll wait.

Of course a picture of both sides might very will help as there could be other markings or devices that woudl lead to identification.

    I'll take a stab... <shrug>

John II Casimir (Polish: Jan II Kazimierz), known in German as Johann Kasimir (March 22, 1609 – December 6, 1672), was King and Grand Duke of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth

In fact Rex is Latin for King. (In French it is Roi)

    Welcome Whit,
Can you tell us a little more about your coin? For example, what does it say on the reverse side? Any letters would be helpful.I also suspect it is a coin of Johann Kasimir since he is the only ruler of that name that I can find from 1663, but I've seen several photos of his coins and they have writing and inscriptions all over them.A photo would also be nice.

In German,it is Koenig, which is where the Dutch & Flemish Koning comes from.
