I do not spend much of my time researching coins and their history anymore. This has its pros and cons. However I have discovered that there was a good reason for me to have an interest in numismatics. I am sure I could look the information up myself....however I choose to spend all my time engineering things and looking for ways to improve the system around me. So please...if anyone knows the answer to this question I would greatly appreciate your knowledge and wisdom on the matter... What type of coin did Jesus handle? Where would be a good place to begin looking for it?
@Deacon Ray has a great collection of religiously significant coins. Perhaps he has some resources he can pass along.
You will be looking for Judea bronzes and Shekels of Tyre, possibly a denarius of Augustus or Tiberius. One denarii of Tiberius is dubbed the "tribute penny", though there is no way of knowing if that is the design of coin Jesus referred to, or a denarius of Augustus. Btw, denarius is the coin that later got converted to the name "penny" in later English translations. A penny at the time was a small silver coin, just like a denarius.
NGC has an article on this subject that mentions "tribute pennies," the "widow's mite" and Pontius Pilate bronzes -> The link Here is also a link on "New Testament coins Jesus used every day." This last link lists 7 coins mentioned in the New Testament: Tyrian Shekel Widow's Mite Drachma Didrachma Quadrans Assarius Denarius
This coin of Tiberius (from my collection) is often identified as a Tribute Penny and the coin Jesus might have used when he said: Mark 12:14 "...Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?" Mark 12:15 "...bring me a penny, that I may see it" Mark 12:16 "...And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? And they said unto him, Caesar's." Mark 12:17 "...Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." However I find it unlikely. I would think he would have held up another coin. The word Caesar was often used as a generic term for ruler by those who translated the bible through the years.
Thank you all for the information. So much. Stay blessed! May God give me the strength to see this to the finding of the coin if it be his will.
