jefferson nickel S mint question

i found a 1969-S nickel in circulation and from what i can find it is only a proof coin. is this right? my other question is what years were S minted jefferson nickels made for circulation and what years only for proof sets?

how can i tell the difference? i'm new to nickels

the proof will be a very highly polished looking finish, with little to no frosting on the devices. especially a 1969
