Have you ever seen this? What is it? What is its value? The other side is like a usual Jefferson nickel..
It's probably a mint error but I don't know what kind mint error.Just wait until the experts come around, like Mikediamond or Foundinrolls. They'll probably tell you.
From the depth of the rim on the Obv. I would guess that someone ground off the lettering. Is that a bit of the top of the T above Jeffersons forehead?
While it could be a filled die error, the precision and specificity of the affected areas is disturbing. One would think that if all the letters in the die face were completely filled with gunk, it should have slopped over into the bust. In the absence of a personal examination, I would tentatively suggest that the letters were ground off. Of course, a strike-through error is still a possibility. Stranger things have happened.
Very probably Thanks for input. It more likely is a result somebody playing with coins and putting into circulation. I found this in a nickel bag. I dont think its a filled die error, because upon closer inspection now I see evidence of somebody removing letters and then covering it up with something. At first I thought it might be some kind of a pattern. but now I'm nearly positive its just a modified nickel. Still a surprising find, though.
I'm going to go with a no-go on this one. Definitely worn down by a machine or something. Pretty interesting though.
I would like to agree with that completely. If the die was filled with grease or gunk of some kind to that degree, it would have also have to had effected the face of Jefferson. What I always wonder about doing things to coins like that is WHY? And where do people get the time to do that? Also, if just put back into circulation, they will never know the fate of that coin.
Could it be the beginning of a hobo nickel done on a jefferson? Often when done on an Indian head Nickel, the lettering is the first thing to be removed from the coin. Just a thought, Bill
