    Hi Everybody,
    How can I find out what the notations on a bunch of Jefferson nickel 2x2's mean? For example:
    1962 Proof Triple Die 36-R-II-C(3)
    1964 Proof Double Die 2-R-II-E
    I have about two dozen different date proof nickels that I recently got in a lot. All have similar notations, but I don't know what they mean or how to verify them. Any help or a lead to a website would be appreciated.
    Also, I just started looking through a roll of AU/BU 1944 S US Philippine 5 Centavo coins and noticed right off that one variety has an inverted mint mark. Is this common? Thanks.

    Hi. Here is an example of the notation, using your first coin listed:

    1962 Proof Triple Die 36-R-II-C(3):

    This coin was minted from die #36 (per CONECA), with the doubling on the "R"everse, and it is a class-II doubled die.

    See the CONECA error/variety website for more information.

    Have fun!

    Hi ,
    What is critical on attributions like these is that you know exactly who marked the 2X2s.

    Many times what a person thinks these coins are, unless examined by a variety expert, turn out to be something completely different.

    Too many incorrectly identified die varieties get passed around on eBay and elsewhere because of something written on a holder.

    Thanks,
    Bill
