Lately I've been looking through change and I came across this nickel. The only place I found any info on it was on this forum back in 2012. How rare is something like this? Is it worth anything? Thanks in advance.
Nice catch! That's a pretty big cud. Too bad the date is gone. It does have some extra value, but as always, it's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
First, welcome to the neighborhood @DANNYFL ! Yeah, that's a nice specimen of a cud. A cud is a die break that forms on the rim of the die and extends into the field. You may find other people who will use a slightly different definition, but I prefer to use the old one from Alan Herbert's book. When a coin is struck by a die with a cud on it, you will note that the definition of the strike on the opposite side, in this case it is the reverse, is weak because metal will flow into the break. On your coin, there is a little weakness on the right end of the building and also some loss on the rim between 1 & 2 o'clock. Chris
Nice cud as far as value it holds a modest premium but as far as how much no one really knows. Look on ebay under cud nickels with no date and that might help you with determining value. Rarity well lets just say i've looked for a while and have never found a cud on a nickel...congrats
Very Nice find. Not worth a fortune but you can definitely find a buyer. Some of the error experts can chime in on the value
Given the hardness of the alloy, you'd think cuds on a nickel would be among the more common ones, but no.
No offense Mr. Weinberg, but I feel I should let @DANNYFL know that you are one of the most prominent error dealers in the country. Since he is new here, we have no way of knowing the extent of his knowledge. With that in mind, would the price you quoted ($75) be a wholesale price or would that price be what you would expect a buyer to pay for it? Thanks! Chris
Thank you for the replies. I'm very new to this and don't know much about coins. I only started having an interest recently when I started purchasing silver bullion and coins. So I really appreciate your knowledge and input and it looks like I found the right place.
What would you guys do? I looked on ebay and didn't see anything exactly like this one or with such a big cud. Should I just get what I can for it? Will holding onto it increase its value down the road?
