I'm roll searching nickels and came across two 1968 S nickels and the mint marks look like they are two different sizes. Was there more than one style mint mark that year? Or am I just seeing things from looking at too many nickels?
Just found another one. So now I have two that look like the mm is small and one that the mm looks large
At that time, mintmarks were hand punched into the dies. As such, each die could have different sizes of MM's. Look at it this way, if that mintmark punch is lightly struck, it will not sink deeply into the die. The net result will be a whimpy, skinney mintmark. If the mintmark punch is struck with more force, it will sink further into the die producing a strong mintmark which, when compared to a weakly struck MM, will "appear" larger. Oh gosh, what the heck am I talking about. Stick your finger into a frosted cake 1/4 of an inch. When you pull it out, there's a hole. Jam your finger into the same cake all the way up to the knuckle. When you pull it out you'll have a cave! (And a mess and a whole bunch of explaining to do!) Same finger but different sized holes. The same is true with mintmark punches.
I wish I did originally, but I've already thrown them into the container with the other almost 4000 im cashing back in at the bank. I used the magnifier I have to examine the mint marks more closely and when I did that there really wasn't a difference in the sizes. No RPMs either.
