I've always said that a Jefferson Nickel collection was a better choice for a starter set than a Lincoln Wheat cent collection (because all the keys can be bought for extremely reasonable prices, not to mention that most dates can be found straight from the bank for face value to get you started.) Then, when you've taken off the training wheels (so to speak) you discover that finding truly gorgeous examples (not to mention trying to get full strikes) for every date is a serious challenge.
