Got this proof the other day and it seems that "S" MM looks different than other "S" MM's I have seen. Is this normal?

Ohhh, I did not even know that, silly me. Show's you how much I know about my Jeffs. I had even asked for the type I not knowing what is was. I love this learning thing. Thanks so much.

The type 2 (clear S) is the scarcer of the two.

Is it a die strike issue that causes the difference?

No. They switched mintmarks late in 1979. They did the same thing in late 1981.

The type II are much more rare than type 1, especially for the cent and the Susan B. Anthony dollar.

The mintmark being "clear" is a good indicator of being type 2, but not definitive. The type 2 mintmark has large, bulbous serifs on the top and bottom parts of the S, and the top of the mintmark is flat -- I like to think of it as a road. If you can see a clear path or road along the top of the S, you've probably got a type 2
