I just picked this Jefferson Nickel off of eBay.
This is struck on a thick planchet at a weight of 5.7 grams.
I thought it was something cool, so I decided to bid.

I didn't think I would win it, thought for sure I would get snipped at the end!! I only paid $16.50 for the coin! :goofer:

The nickel almost fills the whole slab.
I would say it as thick as a nickel with a dime stack on top of it.

Any thoughts on how this happened?

Sometimes when they roll the strips out before blanking they don't get them to the right thickness... and if a coin is blanked out of this thicker area then the planchet is going to be thick and heavy.

I have one of these thick 1987-D nickels and have seen others. They occur in other years. As Matt said, the coin metal strip is sometimes rolled too thick. The thickest nickel I've seen weighed 6.3 grams.
