Well the title states it all. I must say that a lot of you members have some amazing coins and I can only imagine having a collection like some of you do. I just don't know if ill ever be able to afford $500 coin or bring myself to spend that kind of money on one lol wish my pockets were a little deeper. Just wanted to thank everyone who has helped me with questions and such as I am still learning more from this forum everyday.
Its not the coins that makes a numismatist, its knowledge about coins. Any rich man can write a check, that does not make him a numismatist. You should never worry about your budget. You collect the coin that you can afford, but put together the best collection that you can afford, learn all you can about coins, and you will be far ahead of many who care nothing more about coins than what they can sell them for. Chris
That's why I currently focus on Lincoln cents. They are my favorites and more affordable for me at the moment. I have read about 5 books cover to cover about them. Now if only I could come across a nice key date or a 1909svdb while CRH I know chances are slim but ya never know. Sent from my PG06100 using Tapatalk
I spend far too much on my coins and paper money and I'm still envious of a nice Lincoln collection. It's the passion one puts into their collecting that can make the difference. It doesn't matter whether it's cents or gold ducats.
Lol, there are actually quite a few lincoln's worth more than any Venetian gold ducat. I know what you meant man, just had to throw that out there.
I agree with Medoraman. You can go out and buy a $5,000 coin and own only that one coin. You're not considered a numismatist, and besides collecting anything is a hobby, not a competition. I have seen some really nice collections of cents, nickels and small cents. And they're magnificent collections.
That darn 1909-S VDB is now the only one I need. I got tired of seeing that empty hole in the Dansco, so I bought a replica. Filling that spot with a real one may never happen, but I've had the fun of getting the others. I know coins may not be the best investment, but it's really the fun of collecting, and the history of the coins that keeps me going. Collect what you can afford, and have fun with it!
there are very prominant members on here that dont own a single coin, yet know a wealth of information....
I am in pretty much the same situation as the OP. I wish I could get it out of my head, but to buy four twenty dollar coins always seems easier than spending eighty on one. I did finally grow a set a few years back and bought the 1921 Peace Dollar, which helped me overcome that $100 barrier that it took so many years to overcome.
I have one hole in my Lincoln set, and I intend to leave it, that way it is not complete and always one of my priorities when I go to shows.
Hmm. It was never that hard for me. Considering the fact that it takes $70 to fill my gas tank. $100 will buy a *sticker* (license that I DO NOT want) for my license plate that I get to scrape off and buy another next year. Oh yeah, we get to buy two of those a year. In 10 years, there's 2 grand worth of state issued stickers scraped off onto the ground. Up in smoke. I have to spend over $400 on insurance a month (that I never use) just in case something happens. There goes $4800 a year up in smoke. It cost $65 just to do my taxes online, MYSELF. For all the crap you're forced to waste money on and get nothing out of over a lifetime, I have absolutely no regrets buying anything for any hobby that I enjoy. I'm more upset over all the ways other people/government agencies force me to spend money on stuff I don't want. May as well throw the cash in a pile and light a match. At least with a coin, you actually HAVE something. I figure at the current time, I get to spend about 5% of my annual income on hobbies and most of the rest goes to bills. I don't lose a second of sleep over any coin purchase. To the OP, there's no point in being jealous. All collectors are at countless different levels in what they are able to do. Somebody always has more. Somebody has always been collecting longer than someone else. I like seeing what other people have and don't feel like I have to own everything I see. Sometimes it's good to take a break and appreciate what you have. I don't know how old you are but usually as you get older, if you play your cards right, you will have more disposable income. Just buy what you're comfortable with. I tend to desire coins more than I want the cash, so it's not difficult for me to buy a coin. Cash is boring and losing value.
