Can someone help me understand how to read the date on Japanese yen which im pretty sure this is. The site im looking at does not have these symbols on it so im at a complete loss how to read or calculate. Sorry but oriental and arabic coins confuse the heck out of me lol. and the site im looking at is http://www.collectionstudio.com/en/datescalculator/japanese/
Yes, a Japanese 10 yen coin. IIRC the date goes something like year x of emperor y. The caracters on the left are the emperor. This is Hirohito and I think year 42 (1967). Decoding information is in my Krause Collection World Coins book.
I just did some more digging this and the other ones I have are from 1951-58 cause they have a reeded edge. Not a darn one of them worth anything unless in uncirculated condition from what I am reading.
This is actually dated Showa 28 which corresponds to 1958. Fear not, because this is the older type which has the reeded edge, this is actually worth slightly more than face value. At minimum, this has a face value of around 10 cents. Some may want to pay up to 50 cents give and take. In uncirculated condition however, this can go rocket high - up to a good hundred dollar or more as these were often not well preserved in UNC condition.
