    Tokugawa Shogunate. Japan.

Kanei Tsuho. 寛永通寶。In silver. Circa 17-19th century.

Kanei Tsuho were introduced by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the shogun who established the Tokugawa Shogunate which lasted up till the Meiji Restoration at the turn of the 20th century. These Kanei Tsuho were used as the equivalent of common cash coins throughout the period and comes in a plethora of various alloys such predominantly copper, brass and zinc. The variants and study of Kanei Tsuhos is a very large field of study such as mint marks, waves etc but are predominantly very common.

However, occasionally silver and gold variants were minted for special occasions and were not meant for general circulation. Occasions such as the establishment of a new temple, official gifts or special mint issues may see such pieces minted in very limited numbers.

I did not take it out of the original flip I got from the seller. But with the flip it's 6.8g. Minus the average weight of an equivalent flip of 2.2g I would give the weight approximately 4g give and take

Sadly oriental far east coins don't have much of a tradition of pictures except for the charms. ..

Kuan 寛 means widely, broadly, vast. Yong 永 means "eternal". Tong Bao 通寶 means circulating treasure. So if you link it up, it roughly means vast and eternal circulating treasure.

Haha.. Thanks @stevex6 ... Mine is so-so.. Only very few up the Hartill scale. Being Chinese, I am slightly partial to this series as a tribute to my heritage.. But I also collect other civilizations too although not as experienced as you guys.., lol

For some, a 200 year old coin, or building, is "relatively modern" while for others it is almost ancient. ;) Same here. While we do not have a precisely cut-off date for ancient vs modern, this topic is now in World Coins ...

Blame @TIF for the suggestion. ;) Now I'm in Europe and collect mostly coins from around here. So I do not know much about, say, older Asian or early Islamic coinage. So I cannot really comment on your posts, except ... Interesting!

Hey @chrisild . Please feel free to move postings anywhere you feel fitting so that we keep the discussions clean. ;)

I am not so experienced in Islamic coins to be honest except collecting a few that had some historical significance such as famous personalities or events. I tend to hover closely around Asian coins because of their diversity and a couple of American since I was there for awhile. I like this forum because it provides a rich repository of diverse coinage throughout all corners of the world and ages.. Glad to be here :)

The cutoff date is a bit nebulous, but this one was made almost yesterday, relatively speaking. :D. It'll probably get more attention on the World board.

Thanks @chrsmat71 . Actually you should check the reverse too to see the variant. Some have characters indicating mint which could also be pretty Scarce. I suggest getting Hartill's Early Japanese Coins for a good reference. .
