James Garfield presidential dollar #2 on obverse

    Hi, I am new here and am looking for help. Could you please take a look at this coin I found this morning? I am wondering if the 2 is a mint error or was added afterwards. Thanks for your

    Not a mint error. It looks incuse so it must be a counterstamp. The reason why?.. I don't know.

    Yeah...a big incuse "2" would have to be raised in the field of the die--pretty much impossible to be struck this way. Maybe it was a failed attempt to pass off a "$2 coin"? :p
