    So while in the bank today, I agree to take all their $2 bills regardless of condition in order to get the teller to get them for me so I can look through them. I got about $270 worth from them. Well, I'm glad I did.

    Below are scans of the four I'm adding to my collection,

    1953 $2 legal
    1953A $2 legal
    1976 $2 FRN Star
    Unknown $2 Legal

    I was really hesitant to add that last Legal to my collection, but I just could not bring myself to put it in with the other mutilated bills that I need to find a bank to take them. Does anyone have any suggestions on any possible way to determine the series on it? The serial number seems a little low and I don't know if that would be any help in eliminating possibilities.

    Now, I have about $50 in truely mutilated $2 bills that I need to find a bank willing to take them off my hands for me. I have a pretty good relationship with one Chase branch and they are able to send their mutilated off in straps (as opposed to some banks that can only send their cash off in full bundles).

    Where are the scans???
    There they are...must have taken a while to load!..What happened to the last one?? It looks burned??
    You are lucky they did not turn it in for replacement! What a story that note will tell...

    Good finds!!

    Actually, I think we may continue to get lucky IF we are willing to take the entire pile of mutilated off a branches hands.

    Cash handling services liks Brinks will not accept mutilated per the Fed's operating procedures. Brinks will only accept full bundles of cash. So for $2 bills, a bank using Brinks needs to amass $2000 worth before they can get Brinks to take it. Must be frustrating for a small bank knowing that the Fed's operating procedure allows for any amount, although full straps were always customary.

    Gatzdon,

    Can't help you with that last one. WOW!
    I really like the serial number on the 76 though PLUS it was a low printing of only 640,000. Books at $275 in CU!

    As for the $50 in mutilated why not try putting them up in small lots on ebay? Start them at what will cover your fees and let someone else "enjoy" them. Sounds odd but a few years ago I had a guy that collected REALLY circulated notes. The rattier the better and I sold him quite a few $2 notes.

    If I understand the data at uspapermoney.info properly,
    Priest was only on 53 and 53A $2 USN
    53 SN A 00000001 A <-> A 45360000 A
    53A SN A 45360001 A <-> A 6336000 A

    I owe you one. That's some darn good detective work. I totally forgot about the signature on the left. I guess I'm still just in awe at having found three legal tenders. It has been about 15 years since I got my last legal tender from circulation.

    I just noticed I put 1973 instead of 1976 for the file name. What a goof I am.

    The sad part is that they were destined for destruction.

    As for the $50 strap of mutilated, I personally can't see how someone would be interested, but then there are a lot of people who don't care for what I collect. I'm not a big fan of ebay. If someone here thinks there might be an interest, let me know and I will list them in the appropriate forum for face value plus shipping. Mind you, they truely fit the definition of mutilated. Most are in much worse condition than that newly identified 1953A bill I had labeled as unknown. There's a healthy mix of 1976 and newer dates among them.

    even though those $2 bills are worn, they are still neat! :Dwhat did you do btw ask the teller if you could buy the bills that are going to get destroyed?

    I head them off before they say no.

    I ask them if I can buy all the $2 bills they have REGARDLESS of condition. If they are talkitive, I mention how I know they have to save up a minimum in order to send them out, but I'm willing to take them all. You know, do them a favor. Many banks, I've started to earn a reputation for following through on that and not bringing them back either, so it gets easier with tim.

    This reminds me, when I get a chance, I need to upload a scan of the error note I found in this bunch when going back through them again.

    Thanks for sharing the pics. I've always been a fan of $2 notes since I found one as a kid. However, I don't think I've ever seen anything like the condition of that last one. That is a very interesting note for sure.
