I was at my snackbar at work yesterday grabbing a coke. I dropped my dollar in and grabbed my change and a dime caught my eye, a very white dime. So I picked it up and low and behold it was a 1958 philly in xf, not bad for something thats been floating about for half a century.

Silver coins just "jump out" in their visual difference among copper-nickel coins if they are ever received in change. On the extremely rare occasion of encountering a stray silver coin, 43 years after the precious metal was removed from most US coins, it is always a cause for celebration.

For those of us old enough to remember even receiving 90%- or even 40%-silver coins in everyday transactions, one of the reasons why Congress approved of the use of the copper-nickel alloy in 1965 was the "silvery" appearance of dimes and quarters (and eventually half dollars and dollars in 1971) to the public.

I was roll searching the other day and found a 1964 D dime that looks BU. I always wonder how coins like that ever made it into a roll or where it was sitting for the past 44 year in this case. theres not a ding scatch of rub mark or rub mark on it. I rub my head like a chimp looking at it. If pocket change could talk this one would say. I just spent 44 years in some old ladys piggy bank and got wrapped up with these young 2007 fellas on my way to the big melting pot in the sky and you saved me. :)

Good for you! I try to get as much change as possible with my purchases for the same reason. I hate being asked 'do you have 2 cents?" and I say 'no' and they pull it from the cup. I feel bad saying 'NO.... I Want my 98 cents in change! but this encourages me to get over it.

Well if you don't count actively searching the cash drawer when I had a job as a cashier lol... so far only silver I received was a 1964 quarter in change from my lunch at Chipotle. AU is my guess, it's in my type set.
