Never thought I'd see something like this in PCGS. http://cgi.ebay.com/2005-d-PCGS-MS64-Colorful-Toned-West-Virginia-Quarter_W0QQitemZ220149642959QQihZ012QQcategoryZ105645QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/2003-p-PCGS-MS6...Z012QQcategoryZ105644QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem
It's well known the slabs aren't airtight; that's why storage is a hot topic. Is it possible to tone a coin after it's slabbed ?
greattoning is a very upstanding seller and I personally believe it's completely NT. If they were stored in an album this could easily happen over the course of two years or so.
Interesting that the obverse is toned, but the reverse isn't. I would think if only would side tones, it would be the "hidden" side - it's in closer contact to the chemicals in the folder. Normally that's the reverse. State Quarters have an unusual feature - the reverse is more interesting; it's the obverse that's hidden. Which jibes with this specimen...
Just out of curiosity, why would some tone and others not? I've had coins, including the like shown in the auction, in folders for many years, and none have ever shown sign of toning. Some I've had for over 30 years in albums and they look fresh from the mint..both sides. Have I just been lucky, or do just a very few tone naturally? Guy~
If you look at the sellers e-bay store they also have many toned from both NGC and PCGS. I do think the grades are a little off (graders are not Gods) but most biz strikes have dings on them. The fact they are selling so many toned coins throws up a flag for me. Could be man made tone but you can not prove it His store name is Great Toning That tells it all. http://stores.ebay.com/Great-Toning-Rare-Coins
you can, under the right conditions, force "natural" toning. By in which I mean the process is natural, but accellerated to a time frame that is significantly shorter than years and years, sometimes as little as a week, week and a half.
There are as many different conditions that can cause toning as there are people on the earth. Everything is variable. Temperature, humidity, the chemical make-up of the air itself, where you live, how cool or warm you keep your house, how you heat your house ( there are at least 6 ways that I know of ), how you cool your house ( there are at least 4 ways that I know of ), whether or not you or someone else in the house smokes, is there a factory nearby, how you store the coins, what type of album it is, when was the album made - all of these things and an endless number more have an effect on if and how a coin tones. There are no rules carved in stone, change any one of the above or all of them and the toning effects will be different.
In any number of ways - increase humidity, change the temperature, place the coin in contact with something like paper or cardboard. However, when you do such things - is it still natural ?
nope, but I just want to experiment with toning a few wheat cents, without using artificial toning liquid.
Don't believe all that you see. All I am going to say is that in my opinion this seller juices their photos...Mike
