I've got Fugio Fever

When we returned from F.U.N. I had an email from a dealer that I've bought from before with a couple of Fugio's he's offering for sale. He is asking $230 for the nicer looking one and $120 for the other. I think that I might be able to get them both for $300. What do you guys think? My parents have sent my slabbed Fugio to live in the safety deposit box :crying:, but I think they would let me keep these at home :hail: I bought the Newman book on Varieties of the Fugio Cent from Wizard Coin Supply, but I am confused  Any ideas on the variety of these coins? Thanks for your input! Garrett .
    Here are the coins. :)

Hi Garrett - It would be difficult for me to assess these without seeing them in hand. I have Eric Newman's latest book (2008) "United States Fugio Copper Coinage of 1787" as the ultimate reference, but it would be very tough to figure out given the wear on the first and not having enough time to research the second.

If you want my honest opinion, I'd save my money for better conditioned coins for the same money (e.g. no more fugios).

Where did you find his latest book? At F.U.N. I could only find the 2005 printing, but I think it's the 1952 edition. It's kind of tough to decipher.

Fugio Fever? Sounds like an expensive illness to me, lol.

I advise asking the Toad! As you probably know, he has bought a lot of low grade Fugios. He turned his PM feature back on.

I like the bottom one. it does have corrosion verdes on it and it needs some treatment, but if the price is right, it seems work 230 bucks.

I believe the bottom one is a 18-H. Someone else posted one of these recently.

As to the top one, even though it's in worse condition, I bet it's a better variety than the bottom one but I'm still trying to attribute it. ;)

You know what they say, the first thing you have to do is admit you have a problem.... :)

    (thanks for sharing)

I realized it was somewhere else that someone had posted a N18-H. Doug will tell you my memory ain't what it used to be and although he has no clue what it used to be, he knows it couldn't be as bad then as it is now. ;)

I figured I'd share one of my latest Fugio acquistions with you:

It's a N12-S and a R-5/6. It has corrosion damage but it appears it was near uncirculated when it hit the ground. :kewl: Also, the rings appear to have been recut. :D I don't have the books I need on these so maybe someone here, who does have books on them, can check to see what is said about the rings being recut on the N12-S's and give us the skinny on them? :hail:

Garrett , I'd skipp the top one , too much wear , but the bottom one is a keeper , remember I know nothing about early coppers , I just go by looks , listen to Toad and Catberts advice . JMO

If the price is right, I'd buy the top one but the asking prices are more than I'd pay for either. I might consider paying the high amount for both but even that would be pushing it, but I'm a cheapskate. :D I paid less than the expensive one, for the one I just posted. ;)

If someone has a decent Fugio book, I'd appreciate you comparing the one I posted, to a 12-LL in your book. The recut rings do not show on any 12-S's I can find but I've been told the LL reverse has recut rings but I cannot find a pic of a LL reverse. So I need help with this one, since it appears it is not a 12-S.

    Hi everybody... I'm Ricky, and I'm a coin-aholic...

< all together now > HI RICKY

    But seriously folks...

Funky, it all depends on what you like. Personally, I prefer one great coin to several mediocre ones... but that's just me. I would not spend $300 on two more Fugios. I would spend $300 upgrading my existing Fugio. Which always leaves me with just one.

To me, the lower grade one would not bring me enjoyment. It's just too beat down. It would just put me $120 away from my next upgrade.

Update - mine is a 12-S so I did get it right to begin with. :D The doubling appears to be caused by restriking and not recutting. :kewl:

Ps: Hello! My name is Toad and I I've been diagnosed with a Cumplusive Numismaniac Disorder. :goofer:

Toad it was funny that fugio you PM'ed me about I was already bidding on. :p
And that person that always beats me is also bidding on it. I will snipe him at the end. ;)

Then add 10 bucks to the amount I told you to bid. ;)

I have a nemisis out there too. It always pee's me off when they outbid me on something. :headbang:

I think you've got a chance on the one I sent you but I have been noticing prices have gone up on certain items and Fugios are one of them. :(
