After years of shunning bronze and copper coins, I think I can officially say I've fallen off the wagon. In 3 weeks I've added these to my collection. Not sure how I got here, but here I am. I guess I should start hunting for the Draped Bust half cent and cents next, and a braided hair half and flying eagle cent. Not sure I'll ever go mad for Lincolns. That may be a step too far. But I suppose never say never, after all I once said I'd never collectnany US coins that weren't silver.
I'm working on a date set of cents from 1793 to date. I've got quite a few of them, but the 1808 to 1813 coins are going to be the toughest group. I'd like to find nice VF coins for those dates, but that's hard. It seems to be low grade stuff or high grade pieces that sell of "phone number plus part of the exchange" prices. As for the Lincoln cents, I collected those when I was a kid. I'm happy with the circ coins I pulled from circulation, plus the Proof cents in my Proof sets. One a year, means I get to skip the mint marks.
lincoln proofs have been callin me, ever since a freebee with an order. plus i'm getting a lot of reds from the 70-80's from the coffee can of cents collected in the 70's t0 85 or so that talk to me also.
I like half cents too. I used to collect them but die variety and knew the late author, Roger Cohen, who wrote the two editions of the “Little Half Sisters” die variety books. The trouble was I slammed into a wall and could not add any more varieties to my collection. I knew the collectors who owned them, and they weren’t selling, even when they had several duplicates of a variety.
That, I would love to see! I, also, am very impressed! Glad you were able to do this, and glad you let us know of your accomplishment! Outstanding!
I always loved the half and large set series but was overwhelmed by all of the varieties. The one year that was on my bucket list was 1793. I doubt if I'll fulfill that one as I start to finally liquidate the rest of my collection. Although, as always, never say never.
I always used to say exactly that, regarding a Roman gold aureus. “Huh. It’ll never happen in this lifetime.” Now I own two of them. I can still confidently predict I’ll never own a $4 Stella or a Pan-Pac $50.
Now that I'm pushing 70 the word "lifetime" has more significant meaning. Right now I'm still working on upgrading some dates in my #8 NGC IHC registry set. That's pretty much what's left of my years of collecting. At one time I had hoped to complete a 3CN proof set. I got close but I had a hard time concentrating on one series. I completed my Lincoln, Jefferson, and Buffalo series at the same time so I spread my resources out too much to finish the 3CN proof set. If I was 20 years younger I'd probably look at half and large cents with more interest. I've always loved the early coppers!
