This summer, I had a set of three 5-ounce silver coins come into the studio with small Murano glass insects attached. One was a bee, another a butterfly, and this one, a ladybug. They were fun to photograph. For those who like this kind of thing, here's the final image, and below it is the camera setup. This was a newsletter promo detail, so it didn't have my branding on it, and the insert coin image is from the Royal Canadian Mint rendering. I used a single studio light about 18" up and a foot behind a sheet of Lee 216 diffuser (taped to a piece of foam core board with the middle cut out). You can see the lamp's hotspot and gradation across the diffuser. This setup shot was from early in the session, and the coin was rotated 180 degrees in the final shot to see the ladybug head-on. I shot about 20-30 variations on this to find something I liked. There's a white reflector on the left side. It's nice when coin photography isn't just obverse and reverse.
