I finally received my new piece, ANACS 1913 Matte Proof Lincoln cent PF-63 BN. It's a nice piece in person, not the best ever. Nice toning, and strike for the grade. I'm impressed that this thing didn't cost over $1000 like most do. Anyways, I'll try to snap some photos myself, here's the photos from Heritage.
I guess I don't have any experience grading proofs, but that sure looks better than a 63 to me. Very nice!
That's what I though Rlm. ANACS may have overlooked this at the time it was slabbed, plus that was back when they net-gradded? alot of their coins. But I am pretty impressed with it considering it's slabbed as a 63. When you tilt it under a light, you can see that it has been toned. Also, I have never seen a monster toner in person, but do MPL's with monster toning show it by looking at it head on or do you have to tilt it like mine?
Every MPL is different and they are held to a different standard from MS coins. The reverse held this one back. The angle of the light and the angle of view will both change the colors you see. Each one is different. Nice coin. 63 looks right to me. I may change my opinion after seeing more images.
I know nothing about these, but would those black spots limit the grade to pr63 or so? Do those spots get worse over time in the holder?
You won't have to tilt a monster toner to see the colors, although when tilted the colors do become more showy. Here are a few I have imaged from a couple of PCGS Registry collections. Gobrecht's "Monster-Toned" Raisinet Collection curly's matte proof Lincolns
This is only my first, I aint done! I've spotted a PCGS 1910 PF-64 RB for $1500 and a NGC 1909 PF-64 RB for $1800 at a local coin show. I picked up Kevin Flynn's blue book on MPL's at the show and a NGC 1996 Silver Eagle. Although I am very interested in that NGC 1909 MPL for $1800...

This one is not in as nice shape as the ones above but the price was right. I received it from a change machine at the local Safeway grocery store in September. Where has it been for 98 years?
Nice coin willieboyd2. Its always nice to get wheat cents in change, but its better to get them in those early dates.
