Hello all, I am back for another case of identification. My mom showed me this medal today and we are not sure what it is for. It may be a commemorative medal of Federico but I am not sure and am having trouble reading the Roman numerals on the weird font that is used. I hope y'all could help me. Here's the pics and let me knowing you have any questions that I may assist with. Larry
I can't read Italian, but it appears to be the 700th Anniversary of Federico's death.......................MCCL-MCML......1250-1950. Chris
Wait until Petronius shows up. In the meantime, yes, the medal was apparently issued to commemorate the 700th anniversary of Emperor Frederick II's death ("VII Centenario Morte Federico II"). The depicted buildings should be Palermo, primarily the cathedral where he is buried. This "Comitato Onoranze Patronato Regione Siciliana" ... hmm. Some honoring committee under the patronage of the Sicilian region maybe? Just noted that the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has such a medal too (no photo though). This is the English language page, but the description is in Dutch: https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/en/collection/NG-198 Christian
Cool. Sounds like it could have some value. I was actually in Palermo last spring and saw the cathedral. I thought it might be the same but couldn't be sure. Was Federico the king? I thought he was a spiritual leader due to all the crosses inset. For a moment I thought he was a pope. Thanks for the replies. Can't wait to hear more about it. My main objective is to find out why it was issued and how much it may be worth.
Judging from the way it is straddling your fingers, I'm guessing that it is 50-60mm and probably bronze. Medals from that era will normally be worth $50-75. Chris
Well, the one at the museum is 51 mm and weighs almost 64 g. By the way, as for who Federico was, see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_II,_Holy_Roman_Emperor Christian
